Furthermore, some people use the extra screen for the ultimate gaming experience. Regardless of which group you belong to, one question remains: do you know how to use your laptop as a monitor?

If your answer is “no,” then we invite you to continue reading below for a step-by-step guide.

How to Use Your Laptop as a Monitor?

Using Miracast

As technology continues to evolve, you need to learn how to maximize the features of your computer. With a spare laptop at home, you can use it to increase your screen coverage without having to spend much.

But learning how to use a laptop as a monitor involves certain steps. These steps differ depending on the current operating system you are using. For starters, let’s discuss using a laptop as a monitor via Miracast.

In case you’re unfamiliar with Miracast, it is a wireless display standard that mirrors what you see on the screen of your PC, smartphone, or tablet. The great thing about Miracast is that it doesn’t require any physical wires like HDMI cables.

Also, you can find Miracast on Windows devices including your PC. To use a laptop as a monitor via Miracast, hit your laptop’s Start menu, and head on to Settings. Look for “System Icon” then click it.

In the menu to the left, click “Projecting to this PC.” Don’t forget to switch to “Available” the first drop-down menu. Go over the settings and apply your preferences.

Switching over to your main PC, go to the bottom right-hand corner of the taskbar. Hit the Notifications/Action center icon.  On the menu below Notifications, click “Connect.”

Wait for the laptop you wish to turn into an extension to appear. Thereafter, select it then head on to the laptop’s screen. From there, accept the connection.

Extending on Windows 10

To extend your laptop display on Windows 10 without Miracast, you must first ensure you are using the appropriate cable. Check your laptop and see if it requires a DisplayPort, a mini-DisplayPort, or an HDMI cable.

After securing the right cable, connect it to your PC. Open your laptop’s Settings then go to “Display.” Look at the “Select and rearrange displays” section to see if the connection is successful.

You should see at least two numbered screens under this section if the connection is a success. If you don’t see any of these screens, hit “Detect.” This will prompt Windows to look for another display.

In case many screens appear and you don’t know which is which, hit the “Identify” option. This will reveal a number representing each of the available screens.

Additionally, some options help you manage your screens effectively. Go to “Multiple Displays” and hit the dropdown menu. Click “Extend these displays” to expand your display through several screens.

Extending on macOS

Are you one of the millions of Mac users? Worry not, as you can also extend your Mac screen using a laptop. The same with your Windows PC, check the ports and connect the laptop to your Mac using the appropriate cable.

After securing the connections, go to the Apple menu then click “System Preferences.” Choose “Displays” then click the “Arrangement” tab. Also, you don’t want to select the box beside “Mirror Displays.”

Next, drag and drop the displays to arrange them any way you want. If you wish to assign a different display as the primary one, click and drag the menu bar to the screen that you wish to use.

How to Use Your Laptop as a Monitor With a Third-Party Tool

You can also use a third-party tool to convert your laptop into a monitor. As for these tools, there are many to choose from. However, some stand out from the rest like Space Desk.

Download the Space Desk Drive program on your main PC. Do the same thing for the laptop that you plan to use as an extra monitor. But this time, it is the Space Desk Viewer program that you want to download.

Setting up Space Desk involves many steps. You will also have to deal with the settings and configurations. Thankfully, there is the Space Desk User Manual to guide you every step of the way.

Tips for Improving Your Double-Screen Setup

Setting up your laptop as a monitor is good. But improving your setup is another thing. The key is you want to optimize your setup to maximize its benefits.

First, you should learn how to tweak your taskbar. Right-click on the taskbar and open the “Taskbar Settings.” From there, scroll down to “Multiple Displays.”

You will see different switches that come with different commands. The first switch lets you put your shortcuts on one screen instead of two.

Another tip is to master the shortcuts. There are a few that you will likely use most of the time. Press Win+Up or Win+Down to maximize or minimize your current window, respectively.

Press Win+Left or Win+Right to snap the active window to the left or right-hand side of the monitor, respectively. If you wish to move a window to the second monitor without snapping to the edge, press Shift+Win+Left or Shift+Win+Right.

Another tip you should learn is making the displays match. Right-click the desktop and select “Display Settings.” Go to “Select and rearrange displays” then drag the rectangles to match the orientation of the main monitor.

This ensures that your cursor will appear on the same spot when you move it to the left or right.

Also, you can change the scaling and resolution of both monitors. Go to “Scale and layout” and set both monitors to their native resolutions. This is useful if one of your monitors is 1080p and the other one is 4K.
