LG Laptops: What’s Available and Why
LG laptops have been a bit misunderstood as of late. They offer only two real lines of laptops, which are the Gram line and the Ultra line. Of that, the Ultra line is fairly limited in scope (for good reasons).
For comparison, LG has only 44 models from 8th to 10th generation Intel CPUs. Competitors offer 102 different laptops in several different series, excluding business laptop models. Even further, they allow customization within the product page to confusing levels of granularity.
When it comes to the latest choices, LG has thought out their best offerings and narrowed them into 17-inch, 15-inch, and 14-inch sizes. The only outliers to this choice are the 17-inch Ultra, for gaming and the 14-inch 2-in-1 LG Gram with stylus. By far their largest draw is the LG Gram 17, for reasons we’ll get into later.
Why doesn’t LG allow the same granular choices as their competitors? The LG Gram line (as well as the others) depend on carefully balanced power-to-strength-to-weight ratios. They want to give you the best bang for the pound to give your laptop the ultra-portability you always wanted.
LG Gram: Ultra-Portable Sensation
From the LG Gram line of 17-14 inch laptops, the biggest seller is the 17-incher. It boasts a fully 17-inch screen in a 15-inch laptop chassis. This is almost unheard of, if not for the extremely small bezel-to-screen ratio.
Coming in at about 2.8lbs, it’s less than you would expect it to be, picking it up for the first time. But what you should really be surprised by is its durability. With a MIL-STD-810G military spec rating, it can handle the normal rough and tumble of a backpack and more.
The standard includes low-pressure testing, exposure to extreme temperatures and temperature shock while in operation or in storage, freezing rain, fungus, salt fog, and corrosion tests, sand and dust exposure, leakage, acceleration, shock, gunfire vibration, and other vibrations — just to name a few. We doubt you’ll put your LG Gram to the test, but rest assured it earns its spot as one of the best laptops in 2020.
Just because they’re light and smaller than their ultrabook competitors, don’t be calling these LG Gram offerings “little guys.” They pack a punch, given their welterweight status. Certainly, they won’t be competing with a gaming laptop for performance, but they get the job done and more.
With a fingerprint scanner and mil-spec ratings, you know your laptop is secure. With the large screen and touchpad, full four-column keyboard including a numpad, and 10th generation i7 from Intel, you’re guaranteed to be more productive than ever. With thunderbolt, even graphics-intensive operations can be handled with an external graphics card plugged in.
Speaking of graphics, just because the LG Gram 17 has Intel Iris Plus integrated graphics doesn’t mean it’s something to yawn about. The 2020 LG Gram has earned high praise with the perfect balance of power and portability. LG pulled out the stops to make sure they made a quality product line.
Having only a few products on offer allowed them to have a laser focus on what was truly important.

Other LG Laptops: LG Ultra 17 and LG Gram 14 2-in-1
The LG Ultra 17 is very much the same creature as the LG Gram 17, but intended for casual gamers or media content creators on the go.
It handily fills these portability roles, but due to the dedicated graphics card, loses thunderbolt connectivity. That means it also loses external graphics card connectivity and charging while connected to external displays. Otherwise, many of the internal components of the LG Ultra 17 are identical. That includes the SSD, Wifi 6, and even the screen.
The LG Gram 14 2-in-1 is a bit of a departure, which fills the role of an ultraportable large tablet hybrid quite nicely. Having a fully-windows capable device at just over two pounds and a stylus, the 2-in-1 delivers miles away better user experiences than other options in the class.
Powerful enough to run professional programs like the Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher apps at full power and light enough to take anywhere, the 2-in-1 would is perfect for designers on the go. No need to haul a cumbersome digitizer tablet for drawing input, the 2-in-1 is coupled with a Wacom licensed stylus. The designer or digital artist in your life will love it.
